Henry Speight is out of contention for the Rio Olympics after suffering a serious knee injury in a Rugby Sevens practice match on Tuesday.

Speight sustained a grade three medial ligament injury to his right knee during a game against the Australian development team, and is expected to be out for up to 12 weeks.

"We're all gutted for Henry," coach Andy Friend said.

"He made a commitment to the program and has done everything he possibly could to get himself in the frame for Olympic selection."

The injury caps off a horror six months for the Brumbies winger, who fractured a bone above his eye following a head clash during a Super Rugby match in March.

"Even after the facial injury he received some ten weeks ago, Henry's commitment didn't waver but the rugby gods just haven't been kind to him whatsoever," Friend said.

The injury will also rule him out for the remainder of the Super Rugby season.
